Was first held in 2017 (we started as five riders) I think most wanted to see if we’d make it and no one died. The next year we were 15, then the following, almost 30. In March 2021 (postponed from Dec 2020) we capped our “little” December distance ride for the “JHB Left-Behinds” at 50 riders. We didn’t quite get 50 because of the postponement but I reckon we will this time. That is where it will stay until we decide how to scale it up like the MrP JHB to DURB rides – HECTIC! With Sparta300, expect an intermit, invite only, Fun Fest on bicycles for the WHOLE day. FULLY catered, for riders looking to achieve a new milestone or just repeat what they did the year(s) before only quicker – you should only have to bring along your preferred “On-Bike” nutrition.
This is our (Nigel & Bron Laver: Organisers) fund raising quota for The Cows (for CHOC). Each rider will pay R300 for 300km and 3000m of climbing. Seems fair?! We encourage (but no obligation), anyone who wants to donate to the cause (over and above your entry) to donate separately here please: https://www.givengain.com/ap/
With our generous sponsors in place (please take note of their brand/websites below) we expect 100% of your entry money (and donation) goes to the charity. As a participant you can expect Think Bike Marshals, follow vehicles, food, refreshments, memento.
PACE:
We will have three sets of follow vehicles plus 8 bike marshals. The group should stay together for the first 100km at about a 34+ average, thereafter I feel it will automatically split into another one or two groups that will probably be 32 and 30 average by end of day, respectively. This is based on data from previous years and knowing some of the abilities of those that have registered thus far. We’re prepared for three splits I’d like to only see 2 splits. We may split the groups at the start, but I know ego’s run high at 5am.
WARNING:
This is NOT a “ride at your own pace” type ride. We must keep our rolling convoy TIGHT! If you are way off the back and on your own out of sight of the bunch, you will be asked to jump in the follow vehicle so they can catch up to the back of the group. Its only fair to the follow vehicle and the group that is now exposed without a follow vehicle defending their rear flank.
